After I wrote Unintended Consequences, many people said they’d eagerly read anything I chose to write in the future, and I’m foolish enough (or vain enough) to take them at their word.
A novel is like a big, strange creature with an uncertain but lengthy gestation period. Ross in Range, my weekly Internet column, is a way to keep in touch with readers while they’re waiting for the next major birthing. There’s no particular theme to it; anything that comes within shooting distance and captures my interest is apt to end up here: Current events, financial matters, social issues, and government follies are all fair game. So are things that don’t have any real significance in the big scheme of life, but interest me anyway--like lost causes, incurable optimists, and just about anything that turns dead dinosaurs and Ben Franklins into noise and laughter.
That’s both the promise and the curse of the Internet: Anyone can write anything they want without first getting someone else to approve it for publication. Whether anyone will think it is worth reading is a whole different matter. The free market reigns supreme, as it should.
The one constant of Ross in Range is that, health permitting, I’m going to have a new one of these columns for you every single week. All columns will be archived here, so you can catch up on any that you missed.
